WE BELONG, MORE IMPORTANTLY BECAUSE WE ARE SLIGHTLY DAMAGED; WE HAVE DIRT UNDER OUR FINGERNAILS FROM MAKING. THIS SIGNIFIES IT EVEN MORE NECESSARY THAT YOU’RE HERE, JUST BEING SLIGHTLY BROKEN MEANS YOU ALLOW OTHERS A LITTLE MORE FREEDOM TO BE THEMSELVES. IN TURN THERE’S ALWAYS GOING TO BE A DISPARITY BETWEEN WHO YOU ARE & WHO PEOPLE JUDGE YOU AS, BASED ON THE PREVAILING STANDARDS OF ACCEPTABILITY, IT’S AS IF THERE’S A LANGUAGE BARRIER BETWEEN THE MOUTH & EAR OR THE EYE & MIND. BEING MISUNDERSTOOD HAS AN ADVANTAGE IN THAT IT’S A CAMOUFLAGE THAT KEEPS OUR SECRETS, THAT LITTLE COMPONENT OF OURSELVES WE NEED TO KEEP HIDDEN FROM EVERYONE ELSE. FOR THIS COLLECTION OF WORKS, IT IS WHERE THEY SIT BEST FOR ME, WHAT APPEARS ON THE SURFACE AS AN ILLUSTRATION, [THE GIST OF WHICH IS GIVEN AWAY IN THE TITLE], IS A SNAPSHOT OF A SCENARIO THAT REQUIRES DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF THE SITUATION THAT CREATED THE IMAGE, IT’S HERE, FOR ME THAT THE TRUE POWER OF THE WORK LIES. MUCH LIKE THE INTONATION, THE INFLECTION IN A WORD IS ONLY FOUND IN BEING ABLE TO HEAR THE WAY IT’S SPAT OUT, ITS DICTION. STORMIE MILLS www.helengory.com
